Dried Orange Garland

December 16, 2021

A beautiful dried orange garland that adds a nice touch of festive decor and citrusy fragrance to your house.

I’ve been so excited for Christmas decorations for my house since the beginning of November. December is commonly known as a holiday month but for us, it is early November. Walking through the aisles of all the festive decor things, seeing the stillness of frozen air, feeling a touch of charm from ornaments hanging on a Christmas tree, listening to songs played on a radio and starting to hum, all the vibes that bring me the cozy feeling: It’s time of the year again.

I spent last weekend at home decorating the tree and baking. Slicing the fruits, placing them on the tray and baking at a low temperature for a few hours, the house had the delightful, cozy winter scent of freshly dried oranges.

I used a pen to poke a hole in each dried orange slice and a yarn needle to stitch the slices together. You can use a toothpick if you don’t have a needle, it still works. This citrus garland costs a few dollars to make, and it brings a cozy, rustic look to your house. It is perfect for hanging on the Christmas tree, on a cabinet or on the wall.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 oranges
  • Twine or cotton string
  • Yarn needle or a toothpick
  • Pen or a skewer

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 200°F/93°C. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Slice oranges into 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick slices. Place the slices in a single layer on prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake for 3-4 hours or until completely dry, opening the oven door occasionally to flip the slices during baking. Note that it may take longer if you have thicker orange slices.
  • The longer you dry the orange slices, the darker color they’ll get. Let the slices dry at room temperature.
  • Poke a hole in each slice with a pen. Thread the needle with twine and make a stitch through each slice. You can tie the twine to a toothpick and use it as a needle.
