Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons (42g) salted butter, add a pinch of salt if using unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup (75g) packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 ripe bananas, sliced into bite size chunks, or cut in halved lengthwise
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) dark rum or bourbon, read my note for substitution*
  • 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  • In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Add the brown sugar and cinnamon, and mix to combine. Cook the mixture over low medium heat until the sugar has dissolved, and everything is combined. The sauce at this time will be smooth.
  • Stir in the bananas. Cook 2-3 minutes, until the bananas are slightly softened.
  • If you don’t want to flambé: Add in rum or alcohol substitutes (see note below) and stir in as needed, then remove from heat and serve.
  • If you want to flambé: after the bananas are added and slightly cooked in step 3, remove your pan from the heat. Pour the rum over the bananas and use a long lighter to ignite the rum. Gently shake the pan around until the flames burn off, about 30 seconds.
  • Transfer banana and sauce to a bowl or a plate over vanilla ice cream. Add in chopped nuts if desired.

Notes

*Alcohol Substitute: The traditional recipe uses rum in it; however, you can make a non-alcoholic version. If you want to substitute the alcohol in this recipe, you can substitute equal amount of juice like apple juice, pineapple juice, or heavy cream. It will still be delicious although it might not be a traditional recipe and you won’t be able to flambé the dish.
